We join millions across the country and around the world in honoring the life of President George H.W. Bush. In 1990, in a commencement speech at the University of South Carolina, the former president called for the formation of what became the Citizens Democracy Corps—and is now PYXERA Global—in response to the fall of the Berlin Wall. That fledgling organization harnessed the skills of myriad U.S. business professionals who contributed to the rebuilding of the private sector in Eastern Europe.
President Bush’s vision of the power of skilled volunteers to transform economies and enterprise has expanded many times over since then. PYXERA Global has collaborated with tens of thousands of individuals in more than 90 countries around the world. Many of those programs have had, at their core, skilled volunteers. The programs our organization has designed and the partners with whom we’ve worked are extremely diverse. Our models of volunteerism have evolved over the years to respond to emerging and dynamic needs.
We thank and honor President Bush as he has fostered a spirit of volunteerism in the United States and helped to power the modern service movement of today.
