IBM Brings Smarter Cities Challenge to Date, Japan

Understanding the local climate.

In April 2013, a team of six IBM employees spent three weeks in Date, Japan, participating in IBM’s Smarter Cities Challenge (SCC). After a day-long kick-off session at the IBM Japan headquarters in Tokyo, the team was deployed to Date City, Fukushima.  Fukushima is a prefecture (state) on Japan’s main island of Honshu, about two hours away from Tokyo by shinkansen (bullet train).  Date, a city of approximately 65,000 people, was selected for the project because of its proximity to the nuclear reactor that experienced a meltdown in the wake of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
