"John Deere’s Inspiring Leadership program is blazing new trails for corporate volunteerism and for global leadership development. For example, we are pioneering new approaches like our session in New Orleans with leaders from outside the United States, who gained a new appreciation for urban farming challenges in developed countries. Additionally, our participants have reported up to 15% improvement in their leadership skills, especially in the global arena. "

Dr. Thomas Christensen Corporate Volunteerism Manager, John Deere

The Inspiring Leadership Program at John Deere is a robust learning model that links leadership development, corporate strategy, branding, and a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility through skills-based volunteer action. The program is in its third year and has seen success in India, Brazil, Tanzania, the U.S., Thailand, and Russia. To date, 50 John Deere leaders from 13 countries have participated. Sessions are planned for Ghana and Colombia in 2014. Carefully selected, high-potential Deere leaders from around the globe undertake extensive preparation through nine weekly virtual meetings. The preparation culminates in a 4-week immersion experience “in country” working with non-profit organizations. The participants come from different global regions and various functional areas in the company. They are specifically matched to ensure geographic, gender, and functional diversity. The result is a multi-functional, culturally diverse team of Deere leaders placed in an unfamiliar global environment, tasked with accomplishing specific deliverables for their partner organizations. Those deliverables are the result of careful evaluation of project definitions that blend naturally with Deere’s strategic purpose: “Committed to those linked to the land.” Projects are selected by their contributions to the themes of feeding the world, advancing education, and helping communities develop. Participants enhance their global leadership competence personally, professionally, and organizationally. The benefits are twofold: the Deere employees share their business expertise with the organizations who are often better able to accomplish their goals, and the Deere leaders gain the benefit of working in a global environment with new challenges on a diverse and challenging project. The results have been fantastic. One participant remarked, “The program is truly inspirational in that it provided opportunities for self-reflection and improvement. Also, it provided opportunities to help the local client community which made me proud to work for a company that supports this kind of activity.”
