Reimagining Green(er) Solutions to Hunger

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the fragility of food systems worldwide and the need to reimagine the food value chain to ensure greater resilience. While millions of people face an urgent need for food, unprecedented levels of food loss and waste continue to grow. By rescuing good quality food that would be otherwise be wasted, food banks contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while helping feed hungry people. At the same time, traditional food bank models can be infrastructure-heavy—relying on fleets of trucks, refrigerated warehouses, and complex distribution models that are not always energy efficient.

How might food banks and their networks reduce their environmental footprint while increasing service delivery to serve food insecure communities?

Food banking plays a critical role in strengthening food systems at the community level, especially where food loss is high and social protections are weak. This September, your company will have the opportunity to support key players in the fight for food security by partnering with PIMCO and The Global FoodBanking Network in a multi-company Reimagine Series Challenge.
In the Challenge, cross-corporate teams of employees will come together to contribute in a powerful way to the “greening” of food banks—to drive innovation by offering strategies to assess their current environmental impact and identify energy efficient solutions that support operational efficiency, create new delivery modalities, and integrate new technologies.
